Duration Beijing and Kolding Tuesday the 25 th of November – Friday the 5th of December.
London Wednesday 26 th of November – Friday the 5th of December.
The groups can communicate with each other during :
London 9.00 o’clock AM – 3.00 PM
Beijing 4.00 o’clock PM – 10.00 o’clock PM – local time
Kolding 10.00 o’clock AM – 4.00 o’clock PM – local time
All groups are naturally expected to work more.
It is important that each local group has a daily meeting discussing and getting an approval of their work from the others, before sending it on to their group members abroad. Make an agreement with the rest of your group about a time schedule every day. The teachers will have a daily meeting with the groups.
Technical responsibility: Richard Doust
The blackboard How to get access technical details coming Monday and Tuesday Pagesize 19 x19 cm 300 dpi Groups 8 groups Participants about 10 students. In each group there will be 3 student from Beijing, 3 students from London and 4 from Denmark. Appointments Besides working in the groups: Two people from each school will be appointed to deal with the typography / lay-out who connects the different pages so the book all the way through will have the same character / expression Two people from each country will be appointed to document the process all the way through. Put the names of the students in charge on the list on the list. The Project A book in three parts containing Past - Between - Future, which is a combination of text, image, video (max 2 min.), sound realised in two maybe three ways (3): 1. a book which exists in printed form. 2. a book which only exists in virtual form. 3. a combination of the two. This is how the project would develop: Choose one of the following words for your colleagues in the other countries.
1. wishes / visions / ideals / choices / fears / love / hope
2. realised as Past - Between - Future -
3. using quotations
4. create visual metaphors
Try to make the series so they will work together in form and colours.
Use metaphors.
5. to realise actual and virtual book spreads.
We would hope that typography could be either separate or integrated into
the design
Form
A leporello with typography, images / sound / and video(max 2 min)
Left page is only with the text (group no and quotations).
Pages: First Group no, then text and then images / video / sound.
The students in charge of the typography will deal with that.
The typography group – international - has to agree on a lay-out for all
the text quotations – and make a grid and a typographical suggestion to
follow for the others.
The text can be taken from poems / quotations – not long works, articles but a few sentences.
You can of course integrate the typography in the images as well or use it as an expressive way to illustrate the quotations.
1. Words
Wishes, visions, ideals, choices, fears, love and hope.
Each group choose one of the words for their two partner groups in the two other countries.
With the word in mind find a quotations/ fx sentences from a poem chosen by the group and illustrate this by metaphors.
The groups have to use / be inspired by the words their colleagues have
mailed to them – but they find their own text / quotations with the words
in mind.
The word has to be realized as Past – Between – Future.
Be very selective and intentionally in your choice of form and colour.
Less is more!!
And be very communicative. And express your story with metaphors.
Each group have to make all together a series of at least the nine images
related to each other by form and colour.
That is at least three pages from each country of each group for all periods of time.. The groups choose themselves if they want to illustrate the quotations with sound / video / images or photos – it’s up to the groups to select the different media. But within the groups - international – there ought to be different choices of media if possible.
The idea
“ We understand the world by having it narrated to us. The great stories are about societies where little stories are about individuals. What matters is to integrate the two” Sociologist Henrik Dahl. From the book about Kina02 Designskolen
Kolding.
We would like you to look in the past and discuss the future.
To discuss your wishes, visions, ideals, choices, fears, love and hope.
Maybe you choose to have the same view / word though out the project –
finding text, quotations to be inspired from / illustrated by metaphors.
Choose one of these above ideas / words and send it to your colleagues abroad.
In the light of the chosen terms the local groups have to find a quotation / sentences from a poem to be inspired from / using metaphors to express the idea.
The Past
“The rule is, jam to-morrow and jam yesterday – but never jam to-day”
“It must come sometimes to “jam to day” Alice objected.
“No, it can’t” said the Queen. “ It’s jam every other day: to-day isn’t any other day, you know.”
“I don’t understand you” said Alice.
“It’s dreadfully confusing!”
“That’s the effect of living backwards,” the Queen said kindly: “It
always makes one a little giddy at first---“
“Living backwards,” Alice repeated in great astonishment: “I never heard of such a thing!”
“ – but there is one great advantage in it, that one’s memory works both ways.”
“I am sure mine only works one way,” Alice remarked. “I can’t remember things before they happen.”
“It’s a poor sort of memory that only work backwards,” the Queen remarked.
“What sort of things do you remember best?” Alice ventured to ask.
“Oh, things that happen the week after next,” the Queen replied in a
careless tone.
Lewis Carol
Through the Looking Glass, and what Alice found there(1872).
You have got two words from your partner group.
Chose a certain period in your past. Can be five – ten or fit teen years of age.
Look upon this period with one the words you have been given in mind.
Find a quotation / sentences from a poem to transform as visual metaphors
illustrating this period having the chosen word in mind.
Between
“It’s not healthy to live life as a succession of little cool moments.
Either our lives become stories, or there’s just no way to get through them.”
Douglas Coupland, Generation X (1991).
“In my work, I place strong emphasis on what is usually referred to as
the virtualisation or digitalisation of our environment.
We know that 60 percent of the people on this Earth have not even made a phone call in their life.
But still, 30 percent of us live in a digitalised universe that is
artificially constructed, manipulated and no longer some natural or traditional one. At all levels of our life we seem to live more and more with the thing deprived of its substance. You get beer without alcohol, meat without fat, coffee without caffeine...and even virtual sex without sex.”
Slavoj Zizek - f. 1950 Slovenian professor in philosophy
“Terrorism operating on a global scale has opened a new chapter in world risk
society. A clear distinction must be made between the attack itself and the terrorist threat that becomes universal as a result of it. What is politically crucial is ultimately not the risk itself but the perception of the risk. What men fear to be real is real in its consequences - fear creates its own reality”
Ulrick Bech
Use the words you got from you colleagues abroad.
Give a comment about what is happening around you right now.
The shift of paradigms.
Your images can be very world vide but also very personal.
Use the words you have got from your colleagues abroad.
Your feelings, comments about your future – the technical possibilities,
the globalisation, the society, the economics, the environment, terrorism, and surveillance maybe
even solutions of many of the difficult political problems etc.
Each local group come up with a series of at least three images.
Your images can be very world vide but also very personal.
Remember the images have to be connected in form and colour.
